Back Pain
Back pain is a common issue that affects many people at some point in their lives. Fortunately, in most cases, back pain is not a sign of a serious medical condition. Back pain can be caused by a ligament or muscle strain that is fairly simple to treat.
Common Causes of Back Pain
Back pain doesn't have just one cause but can be due to one or more of the following things:
Poor posture
Muscle sprains or strains
Lack of exercise that results in weak muscles and a stiff spine
Many specific conditions are linked to back pain. However, severe pain doesn't always equal a serious problem. Other conditions that can cause back pain include:
Spondylosis
Sciatica
Spinal stenosis
Bone issues such as a fracture or osteoporosis
An infection
A tumor
Inflammation
The most common symptom of back pain is a pain or ache anywhere in the back. It can sometimes radiate into the buttocks and legs. Back pain can also cause pain in other parts of the body, specifically if there are nerves affected. The pain sometimes can dissipate on its own, but sometimes it may require further care.
Back pain that is accompanied by the following symptoms require medical attention:
Pain down the legs
Fever
Weight loss
Difficulty urinating
Numbness around the buttocks
Pain below the knees
Persistent pain even when lying down
Chiropractic Treatment for Back Pain
Prior to your chiropractor beginning any treatment, you should let Dr. Hagan know about any physical problems you are experiencing that may be making it hard for you to perform certain activities. You should also let Dr. Hagan know if you are experiencing weakness, tingling, numbness, or other nerve problems. He will perform a physical exam and test your spinal mobility.
The most common treatment used by chiropractors to help with back pain are adjustments. Adjustments release nerve blockages that help restore proper movement in the joints and help restore proper pain levels. In addition to adjustments, Dr. Hagan may also perform soft tissue techniques to help relieve your back pain.
Chiropractic care is beneficial in treating back pain and making sure that you can resume your everyday activities without surgery or over-the-counter pain meds.
